Tourism’s Turning Point
The Global Challenge Funding Founders for Impact.
Why Tourism, Why Now.
Tourism is one of the world’s most powerful economic engines — employing one in ten people globally and driving nearly 10% of GDP. But after the pandemic, climate shocks, and social inequality, the sector faces a reset. The new mandate isn’t just recovery — it’s regeneration.
That’s why UN Tourism has launched a global call for founders who can transform travel from extraction to impact.
The Global Social Innovation Challenge
The UN Tourism Global Social Innovation Challenge 2025 invites entrepreneurs, startups, and community ventures worldwide to present solutions that make tourism more sustainable, inclusive, and green.
Projects might range from renewable energy systems for hotels to accessible design for travellers with disabilities or digital platforms connecting visitors with local communities.
The challenge is open to:
-
Social enterprises, startups, and nonprofits with scalable impact models.
-
Ventures focused on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 8 (Decent Work), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
Funding Available:
Top teams will receive financial support of up to €30,000, plus tailored mentorship, investor introductions, and global exposure through UN Tourism’s network of development partners. Shortlisted projects gain access to accelerator support and visibility across the UN Tourism Innovation ecosystem.
Timeline & Application:
Applications are open until 31 October 2025 via UN Tourism Challenges & Competitions.
Finalists will pitch in early 2026, with winners announced at the UN Tourism Innovation Forum in Madrid.
Why This Matters for Founders
I’ve seen hundreds of grant and innovation programs, and few combine global reach with authentic impact like this one. It’s not about ticking sustainability boxes; it’s about redesigning how the world travels.
This challenge positions tourism as an entry point for systems change — linking environmental goals to job creation, gender equity, and local prosperity. For founders in climate tech, social enterprise, or circular design, this is a funding opportunity that doubles as a movement.
How to Strengthen Your Application
-
Lead with measurable impact. Quantify outcomes — emissions reduced, communities empowered, jobs sustained.
-
Show alignment with the SDGs. Funders respond to ventures that clearly connect mission to metrics.
-
Collaborate across sectors. Partnering with councils, NGOs, or universities increases credibility.
-
Tell a human story. Behind every solution should be a person or place that benefits. Impact is emotional before it’s financial.
I believe tourism is one of the most underestimated vehicles for women and diverse founders to scale systemic change. When local innovation meets global capital, transformation follows.
From Recovery to Regeneration
Tourism’s rebirth will be led by founders who treat sustainability as strategy — not sacrifice. If your venture builds climate resilience, community equity, or accessibility in travel, this challenge isn’t just a grant; it’s your gateway to global influence.
